OPEN SOURCE FARMING / We keep it simple and honest. Employing the techniques of master farmers of previous generations to produce, provide, and support a product and movement we can all feel good about. Applying the best in farming practices from nutrient density, biodynamics, permaculture, organics and sustainability to all aspects of the plant’s lifecycle (immature, vegetative, flowering, curing, trimming, processing and packaging), Pilot Farm is committed to producing the highest quality, Clean Green Certified®, sun grown, earth made, hand-harvested cannabis. Welcome to the farm—
We source and breed our own seeds and clones. Our farm has been producing and procuring cannabis seeds and clones for the past decade, selectively breeding the best and most suitable cannabis for our unique mountain farm and customer. All seeds and clones are germinated on-site, grown and nurtured in modern greenhouses where temperature, humidity and nutrient levels are maintained to produce the strongest cannabis ready for transplanting outdoor in the native soil.
We believe in our terroir. When the native soil warms, we transplant intominerally rich native soil unique to Pilot Farm. Our cannabis expresses the unique characteristics of our 3,800-4,500 ft elevation mountainside farm - just like a wine expresses its terroir. In an industry where using potting soil and grow lights to grow cannabis start-to-finish is the norm - we believe our sun grown, in native soil, Clean Green Certified® cannabis is the best expression of this flower, imparting a flavor and enchantment to what is Pilot Farm. We soil test each and every season, only adding the necessary nutrients needed to grow a healthy and nutrient dense crop. Typically these nutrients are calcium and phosphorous rock powders, aerobic compost and a little help from the deep sea. We will not alter our soil chemistry negatively by guessing and adding nutrients just because they are sold at the local grow shops or promoted heavily online.
We believe in solid soil science, from a time before chemical fertilizers, in combination with soil microorganisms and the natural and ethereal elements, to produce the highest quality cannabis. We make our own compost and teas, and apply them via foliar and soil applications as needed. Only by using actively aerated aerobic compost and tea, verified via microscopes that we have obtained the organisms we want, we can then assure the beneficial microorganisms are present and ready to go to work.
We believe in balance. Because of our natural, methodical growing practices and high elevation mountainside farm, Pilot Farm does not grow the ‘monster sized’ high yield plants typically associated with an outdoor grow in this region. Our plants are not forced into unnatural states nor nurtured in unnatural environments - our plants are what and where they want to be. Our soil has been here for many thousands of years - it is exceptional and has a unique story to tell via every plant we harvest. We do not truck in hundreds of yards of potting soil just because it may grow a larger plant. We are sustainable and compassionate to the plants and environment we work with.
The natural change in daylight hours is what triggers our plants to start flowering, as we grow outside under the sun. Typically the first week of August is when we see our first flowers forming - an inspiring time on Pilot Farm, an indication of our collective hard work and that we’re almost there. A pivotal milestone, yet more to do as every phase of the plant lifecycle is equally as important as its previous. When the flower reaches four weeks of maturation, we carefully pollinate from our selected male stock onto the chosen strains and individual flowers. Assuring genetic continuity and diversity on Pilot Farm, this concurrently begins the phase to make and ripen new seeds for next season.
We prune with diligence, to promote good airflow and better flower formation. We continue with our tea and soil nutrition. Our native soil is loamy with clay present and therefore holds onto nutrients and water much longer than potting soil. We do not add any nutrition within the last month before harvesting, as this allows the flower to further express what is naturally present, and allows its unique flavors to come through. We stake and net where necessary to support the flowers and plant rootstock, this braces the plants and provides necessary support to withstand the occasional storm that may hit our high canyon mountainside farm prior to harvest. Our plants flower for 8 - 9 weeks on average.
The final weeks before harvest can be exciting and a little nerve wracking, depending on the year’s weather. Yet because of our endemic cultural practices and incredible dry southern Oregon climate, all in all, our cannabis continues to grow strong, hardy and healthy, year after year - producing and imparting the unique flavor of each season. Only when the individual flowers show us that they are ready to be harvested, we begin - typically late September, continuing through October.
All flower is methodically cut down by hand, and carefully transported to specialized facilities where it is dried and cured. Pilot Farm has designed custom ‘cure sheds’ to achieve the perfect cure for our flower, all while under constant supervision of our farm team, assuring temperature and humidity are right where we want them to be, to optimally dry and cure the flower. The cure, another phase in the long process of the plant’s lifecycle, will allow the unique characteristics of the flower, strain and terroir to fully come through and shine.
All of our grade A flower at Pilot Farm is trimmed by hand in our trim house that overlooks a steep terraced cannabis canyon. We do not believe that a trimming machine can equal what a human can do with their hands. We believe a hand trimmed flower is far superior to a machine trimmed flower, and we love the fact that we can employ specialized people for this delicate task and provide customers a truly artisanal product.
Immediately upon determining we’ve achieved the ideal trimmed flower for market, we begin the methodical process of sealing the flower in environmentally conscious packaging with modern technologies to lock-in and assure optimal freshness, food safety and shelf-life, while adhering to a sustainable small packaging footprint ethos. Concurrently, select flower is identified and appropriated for infused products such as oils, extracts, tinctures, concentrates, rosin and full melt bubble hash.
We are in the process of developing a unique menu of infused products and look forward to sharing all the details on such very soon.
